Running with the Bats / Corriendo con los murciélagos

What happens to a young boy who finds himself in the midst of flying bats, swarming mosquitoes, and flickering fireflies while walking home alone after an evening baseball game with his friends? That’s what poet Chris Holaves answers in his suspenseful, bilingual children’s story, Running with the Bats / Corriendo con los murciélagos.

This story is beautifully told in narrative verse and is accurately translated into Spanish. The English and Spanish stanzas appear on the same page, and the verses introduce the young readers to poetry. The Spanish has been certified to be correct by Mary Cozad, Associate Professor of Spanish of Northern Illinois University. She found “Candace Medina’s translation to be excellent, in some places brilliant.”

Additionally, the story is illustrated with John Goomas’s delightful and humorous, pen and ink drawings.

The book is a five-for-one:

  • It is an exciting, adventure story written for third through fifth graders.
  • It is bilingual and entertains both English and/or Spanish readers.
  • It includes vocabulary in both English and Spanish.
  • It contains discussion questions in English and Spanish for parents and teachers to help children understand their fear of strange animals.
  • It includes “bats facts” in Spanish and English verified by Bat Conservation International (www.batcon.org) that children will want to know.

The author truly lives up to Astakos Publishing’s motto: “Good stories grab the imagination.” Running with the Bats / Corriendo con los murciélagos offers a fun read that truly grabs and holds the reader’s imagination.

“The book is absolutely delightful! A wonderful blending of captivating images and a great story. More children’s books should be bilingual, especially if they are the quality of Running with the Bats.”

-- Anne L. Birberick, Chair Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures, Northern Illinois University
