What happens to a young boy when he and his family move into a spooky, vacant house, and only he sees a strange family sitting at the kitchen table in the middle of the night sipping warm milk?

Even the Dead Get Up for Milk / Hasta los muertos se levantan por leche written by award winning poet Chris Holaves answers this question in a humorous, narrative poem told in both English and Spanish. John Goomas’s post modern, pen and ink drawings increase the reader’s suspense as these peculiar guests visit the kitchen every night. Sour smells, flickering lights, and large, shadow-filled rooms stir the young boy’s imagination. Ghostly shapes and creepy sounds frighten him as he overcomes his fear of this strange home and its nightly visitors.

Holaves believes reading is the key to overcoming the barriers of learning any language. This book, the first in a series, gives the reader an opportunity to enjoy a suspenseful story in English or Spanish. Bilingual bonuses include vocabulary lists and discussion topics. These topics, “Things to Talk About” and “What You Can Do,” can help children understand and manage their fear of the dark.

Even the Dead Get Up for Milk / Hasta los muertos se levantan por leche will be released May 2, 2008. It can be purchased from Baker and Taylor, Barnes & Noble.com, Follett Library Resources, Inc., and from www.astakospublishing.com.
